TAFE New England apprentice hairdressing students were graced with hairdressing royalty at the Tamworth campus this week. Recognised hair trainer, Kylie Dwyer, has partnered with TAFE New England to deliver a boot camp to enhance the skills and knowledge of first and second year apprentices for three days this week.

In recent times, hairdressing apprenticeships have been decreased from four years to three, however TAFE New England’s innovative approach of working with industry specialists ensures the breadth and depth of experience students receives is world class. TAFE New England Hairdressing Head Teacher, Tania Hayter, said. The additional expertise that Kylie Dwyer will deliver to local apprentices is invaluable.

‘Kylie is not only doing the boot camp, but will deliver a series of workshops throughout the year to TAFE New England students’, Ms Hayter said. ‘The workshops will include short hair techniques for men and women, barbering and styling, upstyles and trends.’

The training compliments the curriculum delivered at TAFE New England, which is reviewed annually in consultation with industry professionals, including input from Ms Dwyer herself. Ms Hayter reiterated the importance of having a hairdressing industry specialist like Kylie in the classroom.

‘This is a fantastic opportunity for our students and their employers. Even though apprentice training times have been shortened, we can guarantee that our students have the necessary skills and knowledge required to commence working on the floor and creating a client base’, Ms Hayter said.

‘My teachers and I are also observing the training which will compliment what our students are learning from Kylie’, Ms Hayter said.
