Students get a taste of careers at TAFE New England

Staff at the TAFE New England Gunnedah campus are busily preparing for the BHP Billiton Skills Taster Day which will be held on Monday 22 June.

Gunnedah Mayor, Owen Hasler, will open the Skills Taster Day. Students from Gunnedah High School, St Mary’s College and Quirindi High School will spill through the gates of the campus to gain hands on experience and a taste of skills for a variety of careers.

The annual event, which is sponsored by BHP Billiton, is a joint initiative of TAFE New England, Careers Network Incorporated, TESA Mining and the local high schools. The day provides an excellent opportunity for students to meet TAFE New England teaching staff, and support staff, to discuss vocational study options, career opportunities and career pathways.

Event organiser and Campus Manager, Christine Nash says “We welcome all students to attend the Gunnedah campus on Monday to experience the state-of-the-art facilities that are available right here on their doorstep”.

“If students are unsure of what they are planning to do after completing the HSC, or would like to investigate pathways into tertiary study, there a range of qualified industry professionals that can discuss a variety of study options available to them”.

A variety of skills will be on show at the event including resources and infrastructure, engineering, construction, enrolled nursing, business, design and digital media and many more. Gunnedah Rotary Club will be on hand to prepare a sausage sizzle for students who have worked up an appetite for their career and lunch!

The BHP Billiton Skills Taster Day will be held from 9.15am to 3.15pm at the TAFE New England Gunnedah Campus which is located in Hunter Street.
