TVET students build skills for the future
Excitement is building within the Tamworth community for the completion of the Tamworth Adventure Playground at the Marsupial Park. TAFE New England students are equally as excited to be rolling up their sleeves and assisting with the construction of the playground which will commence on 28 July.
34 HSC students, studying the Certificate II in Construction as part of the TAFE Delivered Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program, will gain on-the-job experience as they assist with the construction of the playground, as part of the 70 hour work placement component of the course.
By participating in the construction of the playground, the students will also have the opportunity to demonstrate the skills and knowledge that they have gained at TAFE New England. They will also gain skills and experience in a variety of competencies including workplace communication, working in a team, reading and interpreting plans and specifications and using hand and power tools.
TAFE New England Building and Construction Head Teacher, Grant Bowden said “This is a great opportunity for these prospective builders to work on a construction site and to gain experience in the construction process”.
“The students will be required to work with supervisors and follow instructions to carry out various tasks, which is invaluable work experience”, Mr Bowden added.
Tamworth Regional Council are the registered employer/workplace supervisor for the students whilst they participate in the construction process. TAFE New England and Tamworth Regional Council have a strong working relationship and work together on other projects such as the Work Ready Program for veterinary students at the Tamworth Regional Council Pound.
