Students plant seeds for their employment future
Boggabilla jobseekers have embraced the opportunity to learn practical skills whilst gaining a qualification to enhance their employment prospects.
The joint initiative between TAFE New England and Joblink Plus will provide 19 jobseekers in Boggabilla with the opportunity to develop employment and life skills by undertaking the Certificate II Skills for Work and Training at the Boggabilla campus.
The training, which has been modified from classroom based into an outdoor project, will include small motor maintenance, general construction and horticulture. The students will research, design, construct and maintain a communal vegetable garden and chicken coop. The students have expressed an interest in propagation techniques, including herbs and bush tucker.
The Certificate II Skills for Work and Training is a course that has been developed for people who require a Year 10 Certificate equivalent qualification for employment, education and training. The participants will acquire the skills and knowledge to access further education.
TAFE New England Business Relationship Consultant, Pam Hill, said “the students will choose the plants which will be suitable for the environment. The class will also sketch the layout and position of the garden beds”.
