NAIDOC Week celebrations continue at TAFE New England

Staff and students will gather to celebrate NAIDOC Week at TAFE New England this week. Each year, the Institute takes part in a number of activities to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated by Australians from all walks of life.

“TAFE New England prides itself on being part of local community celebrations during NAIDOC Week and we encourage communities, government agencies, local councils, schools and workplaces to get involved,” said Peter Heilbuth, Institute Director.

The Aboriginal Learning Circle is part of TAFE New England and aims to develop courses appropriate for Aboriginal people and provide support services to students. The Aboriginal Learning Circle aims to pursue successful outcomes for students both personally and through education.

Aboriginal Learning Circle Manager, Shaun Allen said “we look forward to attending events like NAIDOC week in our communities. It is an opportunity to meet potential students face to face and be part of the communities that we serve.”

TAFE New England Moree campus student, Elizabeth Munro has been studying the Certificate III in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts and was awarded the prestigious Student of The Year Award and Student Achievement Award at the recent TAFE New England Student and Staff Awards Gala Evening. “Winning this award is better than winning the lotto”, Ms Munro said.

Aboriginal Learning Circle Student Support Officer and TAFE New England student, Bronwyn Cocking, was the winner of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year winner at the recent State Training Awards. Ms Cocking has a passion for working with Aboriginal people and was on hand to provide advice and course information to potential students during the celebrations.

A luncheon for students and staff will be held in Binaalbaa (T Block) at the TAFE New England Tamworth campus on 22 July from 11am.
